We had the honor of visiting the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery during the Washington, DC leg of our Northeast trip this week. It's difficult to describe the range of emotions that we experienced during the visit. Its an incredibly peaceful and serene place, and we were fortunate to see it on a beautiful early fall day, but the number of grave markers also gave us a feeling of overwhelming gratitude for the men and women who have so bravely protected our country during both war time and peace.

During our visit, we had the opportunity to witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Since July 2, 1937, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has been guarded continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year without a single break. Watching the level of precision, honor, and care with which each soldier guards the tomb is a truly powerful moment. Every movement with purpose, every turn a recognition of the ultimate sacrifice made for our country and our freedom.

During the visit, as a funeral procession passed, there was a moment of recognition that everything else we had seen this week in Boston, New York, Philadelphia an Washington, DC was made possible by the men and women resting at Arlington. A truly powerful experience.
